Kexy looked around the table quizzically. "Did I hear properly? We're being told it's our God-given duty to explore ancient ruins, slay villainous Gnolls, and take our spoils to better the village? All for a small tithe to the Church?"

Then she smiled. "Anyone up for it?"

Lars squints at the retreating back of the priest, and then tells the others in an ominous whisper. "We'd better take the deal, before he gets away!"

Lars stands up, with every intention of chasing down the penitent, grabbing the hem of his robes and kissing his oozing feet. "Valcerdies, Valcerdies! LARS IS A GOOD BOY! LARS DOESN'T WANT TO WORK ANY MORE, HE'LL FIGHT ANYTHING INSTEAD OF WORKING!"

Divad shakes his head and chuckles. We're from the government, and we're here to help.

"If there were perfumed heathen doxies frolicking in the temple over the hill, I'm sure Sinlocah would have ministered to their holes by now." He looks upward in mock exasperation. "I mean souls. I'll master this language yet." He drains his cup of water, and finishes the last of the sopping dark bread.

"And yes, Kexy, I'm up for it, as is every other able-bodied man in the village, whether he knows it or not. I suspect a short spell for volunteering, followed by impressment." Divad crouches down, and picks up a smooth, oblong gray stone from the ground. "We might as well get dressed for it while daylight remains to us."

Gnolls! Savages! Serpents! Fair Folk! Boogeymen! Degenerate lords, profligate priests!

Bhartec was slowly edging towards his horse in case the priest was looking for him in the crowd to point the finger at. After a few moments he realizes there is no personal threat and he sits to take a drink with a sigh.

"Calm yourself Lars, in due time we will go skulking into the ruins. There is a word for impatient souls who match their bravery against the unwaivering horrors in the dark, and that word is dead."

"The holes in the ground are not likely to be going anywhere soon. After the first few villagers bring back tales of death and woe, or simply are not heard from again, the Priests will likely become a bit more desperate and perhaps issue a forward payment or proper writ."

"Besides, after a few days we can form a strong force, properly prepare, and examine the corpses of the village mongrels we find on the way and perhaps know what threats lay ahead of us."

Pointedly ignoring the fellow preists remarks, Sinlocah turns the full power of his charismatic gaze on his fellows. "Pragmatic Bhartec, but cowardly. I say we go in first and get the best spoils... for the glory of the church, of course."

"Then, sirs, I propose we form a fellowship!" Kexy declares.

"The spoils split equally amongst we five, with the appropriate tithes taken off each individual share."

Kexy looks to each man for consent or objection.

"Our next decision would of course be where to begin... Anyone have a suggestion?"

[OOC: Scott, do we know any rumors, legends, hints to share with each other?]

Lars leans forward to join the war council, his enthusiasm somewhat abbreviated by Bhartec's incomprehensible but usually trustworthy reasoning. He drools out a conspiratorial whisper, "I think we should leave the Doxies alone. The priest is probably just mistaken, I don't know anybody who doesn't like them. They're nice."

You have all ranged somewhat on your various errands, and Lars is a veteran Fighting Man, so he has likely had some engagements with the sundry common inimical creatures of the countryside.

There is a tower on the eastern cliffs, near the abandoned thorp of Runstibble; this edifice is inhabited by one Sligma, an alleged Warlock or Witch who has not been seen in a generation, perhaps longer, and who in any event went about always hooded, so as to make gender indeterminate. Its apprentice, Deraquan, enters Tegel on occasion to replenish the tower's stocks of provender.

Once a year, in the summer, a contingent of inky-eyed, ridge-toothed Mermen boils up from the nearby sea and clambers up the beach at midnight to carry off any so unlucky as to be found abroad. To date, none have proven able to read the signs so as to foretell the coming of the swarm, so summer is a tense season until the Mermen have come and gone.

Of pressing concern on a more consistent seasonal basis are the depredations of a renegade Rump, known only as the Roughneck, who emerges from the woods to terrorize the roads with his band of houseless evil Men, his shrill "STAND AND DELIVER" causing merchants and pilgrims to quail.

Two local legends of death from above treat with, respectively, ancient Nightfang, a bat-like thing who stirs perhaps once a generation, and the Dearth Monster of Derfingel Marsh, a winged black creature which feasts upon livestock and the odd tenant farmer, leaving behind only smoking, liquefied bones. This last took up abode in the swamp about a decade ago and has proven most vexatious.

The ruins of which Valdercies spoke are atop a wooded hill to the north of Derfingel Marsh, and until his announcement were considered under a Ban of the Church, that is, ground not to be trod by the feet of the baptized. It is well known that strange cannibal savages, hold-overs from the days before St. Hrothmir, rut and scrabble in the ruins, and consort with Gnolls and Serpent Men therein. It is also well known that the ruins brim with heathen gold, jewels, and unguents, should anyone brave their terrors.

Leaning close, Sinlocah says in a conspiritorial whisper, "I say we start with the Warlock. The village has never had a problem with him, nothing beyond rumour anyway, and he may have information on some of the problems plaguing the area. What says everyone?"

Bhartec will thumb his unshaven jawline.

"My inclination would be to deal with the threat on a time table, notably the mermen. Naturally if they are deep within the sea there is little we can do, but if they dwell in the cliffs near the time they raid it could be possible to thwart them before they attack."

"Regardless, if we seek audience with the Wizards tower first, we should beg of him if any rhythm to their attacks. That is if he does not smote us first."

Bhartec will pack his gear and mount his horse, ready to roll.

[I'm assuming the village mistrust the wizard but does not necessarily have him on the 'to be killed' list]

"It sounds like just as much trouble as anything else, but with the least walking. Let me put my armor on."

Divad leaves for his chambers in the church, and returns after several minutes in plate and mail, with a mace clanking against his greaves and a shield slung over his shoulder.

[Same deal here. Lars nods enthusiastically and returns with heavy armor and a huge, improbable flail crusted with old gore.]

After returning from getting his kit together, Sinlocah takes stock of his companions with an excited look in his eye. "Right, looks like we are about ready. Anyone know the shortest route to the tower?"
