Apropos of nothing, really, I'm fairly close to completing my 70s/early 80s Judges Guild "Wilderlands" collection. There are still a few rares I need, but it's only a matter of time (have my eye on one now). These are the original OD&D and early AD&D products from which the d20 Wilderlands of High Fantasy box was derived, although they're much more skeletal (and therefore, to me, much more useful).

I'm hard at work stocking what I think will be a pretty fun dungeon complex beneath the City State of the Invincible Overlord, and I have hex-crawl info for the important areas of the Wilderlands, along with the City States of the Invincible Overlord, the World Emperor, Tarantis, and the original Blackmoor map and campaign notes. Basically enough stuff to run an OD&D campaign for the rest of my life.

So, at some point when the PCs have a bit more experience, y'all might consider wandering through a gate to the Wilderlands and having a look around for a bit. Smile

Some time in the future, I may be running a Wilderlands PBP. If there's a consensus among this group, I will be happy to Gate the current characters over (although we'd probably want to stay out of the Wilderlands version of the Tegel area to avoid unmanageable paradox).

If not, I will probably hit up a couple of the OD&D boards for players. Any of you are always absolutely welcome to roll up another character for Wilderlands play, but I understand that people are either working, attending law school, or both, and may not have time to post to two games.

The campaign will use a ruleset almost identical to the current one -- 1974 OD&D plus a few things from Supplement I (Greyhawk) and The Strategic Review. The initial setting will be somewhere in the lands of the City State of the Invincible Overlord, the second largest settlement in the Wilderlands (the City State of the World Emperor being the largest).

If you're not familiar with the Wilderlands, it was pretty innovative for its time. Judges Guild put out the first D&D city (Invincible Overlord) and the first significant wilderness supplement (the Wilderlands of High Fantasy booklet and maps). Eventually, the entire 18-map Wilderlands region was mapped out hex-by-hex, with (very) skeletal details for every settlement, lair, ruin, and so on. Basically, the Platonic ideal of what everyone calls "sandbox gaming" now -- the Ref doesn't shoehorn people into a storyline, he just turns them loose and has enough details at his fingertips to spark ideas and keep up with them.

The Wilderlands don't really simulate any particular genre. There are swords-and-sorcery elements, 9-level dungeons, sprawling cities, jungles, themed areas, and so on. It's basically a spitwad of everything people thought was cool in the late 70s and early 80s, from Vance to Howard to Tolkien to Moorcock, with stuff from Earth mythology stuffed in. Messy but awesome.

Because details were so sparse, and the area covered so large, everyone's Wilderlands campaign is different. One interpretation is the d20 version of Wilderlands, which I think is really good, and none of which I'll be using as I'd rather just make up the details myself.

Let me know if you have any interest in either taking the current characters over or generating a second character to play with a new group. If we Gate over, it will probably be relatively soon. If I start a second PBP, I'm not sure when that will be.

I'd want in, although I'm probably at least equally happy with making a new PC.

Secondly, personal note: I'm flying to the Netherlands for like seven weeks. I leave thursday. I should be able to shoehorn posting into my "check email" time, but I may no longer be the lightning six-gun poster I have been. Also, my most regular posting times may no longer line up neatly with everyone else's, time zones, etc.

Scott: Do you recommend Blogspot? I've been promising my family I'd use some means of keeping them updated on my well-being and activities, and I don't really want to have to phone people, or, in fact, give them many details of what I'm actually up to. So, I need a website where I can regularly post platitudes and photos of pretty european buildings.

Behind the scenes, of course, I will most likely be eating hash and associating with entertaining scumbags.

Your thoughts on this matter are appreciated.

I've never had any problems with Blogspot. The interface is intuitive and there've never been any server issues I'm aware of. I might actually start an OD&D/Wilderlands blog, as my other blog is on hiatus.

We will work with your schedule. If it turns out that you can't post at all for any of that time period, we'll assume Lars attacks.

I'd like for either all current PCs to port over to the Wilderlands or none. The main reason is that I usually start the first bunch of PCs in any campaign at 1st level, and I'd rather not have 2nd or 3rd level "legacy" PCs in the mix with the n00bs.

If we Gate over, I will probably have you pop into a "Counter-Tegel" ... you'd start off in Tegel Village, but it would be quite different in some fairly significant aspects than the Tegel you grew up in, and people would have no idea who you are. In other words, the original Wilderlands version of Tegel. From there, you can go anywhere and do anything you like.

The Nameless God may or may not have any adherents in the Wilderlands. There are hundreds of gods worshipped in the Wilderlands, including gods from Earth, Hyboria, Melnibone, the Mythos, etc. In any case, Sinlocah will keep all his clerical powers, and can work towards establishing the cult himself if he likes.

I don't see any particular problems with Gating over ... we used to do it all the time when we wanted to try out a new setting but liked our characters. It's actually kind of fun watching characters adjust to the fact that their entire world has changed. It doesn't sound like there are any real objections so far, so let me know if there are. I'd rather play it with y'all than have to round up a whole new group of random internet weirdos.

Will Elves be different than you've crafted for this game?

IOW, how are Wilderlands elves depicted?

Wilderlands elves are generally depicted as "traditional" D&D elves. There are half-elves, again, basically like D&D half-elves (in rules terms, a Wilderlands half-elf would favor one parent or the other, and be mechanically identical to either a human or an elf).

Kexy's origins and nature wouldn't change a bit.

I should clarify ... Wilderlands elves will still use the exact same rules as we've been using. They're just earthly beings, not weird extraplanar rape-entities.

Also, if anyone has reservations about such a move, I'll maintain the status quo in the current game. I'm not trying to bail on what we're doing now, and I can happily maintain it for however long. Just let me know either here or by PM and I'll run a separate Wilderlands campaign, and any of y'all who want to play will be welcome. That might end up being the best idea and I may end up doing that anyway. So don't feel pressured to go along if you'd rather stick with the current game as it is.
