[Well, let's take our loot and begone with us. If we can manage to do so, I move that we haul the dead guy along with us. I wouldn't normally do so, but his armor's worth something and it'll take to long to strip him. Also, his corpse requires further examination. Scott: We are going standard hit-points, right? As in, your performance is unimpaired until you die, so Lars is quite capable of lending his aid to our epic schlepping. Please correct me if I'm wrong.]

[Yeah, that's correct, all the other stuff is just flavor text. If a single attack brings you very close to death, you'll probably have a scar or an ache or whatever, but it has no mechanical effect.]

[Cool. Chicks dig scars, y'know.]

Lars, finding himself unencumbered by arms, grabs whatever the armored figure was carrying before Bhartec made an end of him. He then proceeds to shoulder his pack and start attempting to hoist the fresh canned corpse. "Help me. Guy's heavy. Need to go." He nods at the trickle of blood staining his greaves. "Done for today." He raps the body's helm with one mailed knuckle. "Nobody home, but the armor's still good. Let's go. Quick. Quick."

While Lars hoists the body, Kexy will scan the surrounding wilderness in search of another surprise attack.

"I can carry anything necessary, but I suggest we depart as quickly as possible and pray we are not followed back to the village."

"I'll watch the back, then," Ymmas says. "But for God's sake, let's get the hell out of here.

"I'm sure you all saw our enemies don't need torchlight to fight down there, and they won't need it to fight up here."

[Please let me know if there are any tasks you want to accomplish while back in town. If you want it public, you can post it here or in the OOC thread. If you don't want it public, tonight I put up a private forum for each character for that sort of thing. I have to go take a nap first or I will die.]

[Anything abnormal about the body or anything he was carting around?]

Bartec is his usual bothersome self until the group is ready to go again.

[His armor is reasonably well-kept but is obviously of some antiquity. This man appears normal to you, and looks to be of the same stock as the savages you fought on the surface, but his accoutrements and demeanor are of a higher cast. His broadsword is well-made, but does not have a thrusting point. Also, someone has slit his throat.]

"It seems they have a warrior caste, possibly nobility. Looks human in all other ways. Wonder if they could be converted to The One True God? Too bad we could not use him and his people to wipe out the other creatures of the swamp. That opportunity seems to be gone."

Sinlocah will spend some time with his superiors. [Some things I would like to discuss on the private forum.]

Scott wrote:
Your fallen foes are men, gaunt and sinewy and with less than stellar hygiene and dentition suggesting a lifetime of hardship, savagery, and malnutrition.

The men's personal effects consist of their spears, shields, filthy leathers, and assorted gruesome or incomprehensible fetishes, trinkets, and other disgusting ephemera. Their dropped cache consists of the following:

- two coils of good rope, about 50' each
- 36 torches, neatly bundled
- 5 bronze spikes
- enough cheese and dried meat for about 24 man-days
- 6 flagons of water
- 1 flagon of what smells like weak wine
- 2 bronze daggers
- 1 stone hammer

Several of the items give you pause ... for instance, you are dubious that the art of cheesemaking is sufficiently advanced in these primitive berserks to account for the small wax-rinded wheels they carry. Similarly, the rope, torches, and flagons seem the products of civilized hands.

Plus the plate armor and sword of the dead guy. Lars most immediately is going to take some portion of the rations and the wine, and disappear up into his loft for a few days to brood and heal. He reappears occasionally, limping along with a great stick, to get water and supplies.

After four or five days of this, he reappears, obtains soap and razor, and disappears out to the river. Several hours later, he returns. He is entirely shaven, no longer having even eyebrows, and with numerous small nicks and abrasions, suggesting uncertainty with the process and an overuse of sand as an exfoliant. Then, he searches out Kexy.

"Hey. Kexy. It's Lars." He scratches his roughly-shorn scalp. "Valcidies told me something. I talked to him. He said I had to start being clean, if I wanted to fight for the church. Yeah. He wanted me to be clean. And proud of it. I think." Lars grunts and pauses to sniff under his armpit. "So, I cut all my hair off. Used soap. Never done that before. All the little critters drowned in the river. It was funny. Less itchy." He chortles and hoots, eyes rolling wildly in hollow sockets under a protruding brow. "Anyway. I tried to get started. But I don't know what I'm doing. So. You're a girl. You know all about this stuff. How to smell nice. And keep bugs off you. Like the whores up on the hill. But I can't talk to them. Because I'm broke. So I figured I'd ask you. Since we've been fighting together. I figure that's like being friends."

"Oh! I know how to take care of armor. The Sergeant taught me. Taught me really good. So I'd never forget." Lars rubs thoughtfully at an old burn-scar on the side of his neck, a faint smile on his face. "Yeah. He knew how to make me remember stuff. Anyway. I'm going to be cleaning and polishing my armor. While I finish healing up. I could get yours too. And your sword and stuff. If you'll help me get clean. I can't go ask Valcidies for a blessing if I'm still all dirty."

He cocks his head. "I think that's why I got stabbed. He told me to get clean and I didn't. So god was probably mad at me. For fighting for the church while I was still dirty. I think that's probably what did it."

Well, Lars, Kexy laughs, its nice to know you realize Im different from the whores on the hill. I wish Valcerdies agreed.

Kexy sighs then opens her bag and fumbles inside. Lars can hear the clink of bottles and small jars inside.

Kexy looks up occasionally as she searches inside her reticule for something.

I strongly suggest you keep up with the regular bathing, especially with the soap. At least wash yourself off once a day, and try to take a full bathor even a swimonce a week when the weather warms.

Kexy continues to jumble bottles and jars in her pouch. Where is that stuff

Oh! And make sure to wash your clothes and beddinganything made of cloth. Boil water in a big pot, then dunk the clothes in the water. Be careful not to burn yourself! Kexy smiles and looks Lars right in the eye when she says this, then goes back to her rummaging.

I suggest you use a stick to swirl the stuff around. Make sure everything gets good and wetand leave it in there until the water cools. Then string everything up on a laundry-line like the rest of us do. This should kill all the chiggers. Once this is done, I will come by and teach you how to wash the clothes tomorrow.

Kexy suddenly exclaims, Here it is! and produces a small bottle from her bag. This is goldenseal tincture. It will help fend off the itchy bugs. Mix it with water and then rub it all over the places where your hair grows. Wait until tomorrow though, after the bleeding stops from where you shaved.

And Kexy adds, I want you to sweep out that hay loft you live in. Get rid of the old hay and put in some fresh hay every few weeks.

Kexy smiles at Lars, standing before her, befuddled.

Lets review! she asserts. One, keep bathing; soap and water are our friends. Two, wash your clothes in boiling water, but be careful not to burn yourself. Three, sweep out the loft and replace the old hay with new hay. Four, mix the stuff from the bottle with water and rub it on your hairy parts tomorrow.

Do you think you can remember all that until tomorrow? Kexy asks hesitantly.

Lars' face screws up with the utmost concentration. "Okay. I think I have it. Bathe regular-like. Boil my clothes. Sweep. Get new hay. Use the golden-stuff.' He counts these things off on ragged-nailed fingers. Lars is momentarily somewhat offended - he DOES keep his room swept, but it occurs to him there might be some occult reason for sweeping it again, known only to clean people. Or women. Or, indeed, half-elves. He take the vial and regards it with lip-chewing curiosity. "I don't have hairy parts any more. I shaved. A lot. Took hours." He keeps mumbling under his breath while going over the fingers of his left hand, tapping them rhythmically against his thumb in an attempt to commit this recipe for hygiene to memory.
