For a moment a look of protest comes across Bhartec's face which given in to resignation, "Very well, lets drag the carcass back."

Bhartec leans to Lars, "Should I fall in battle please make sure I am dead, then loot everything of value get good and drunk. Then burning my carcass on the spot like a good friend would. The last thing I want is to be dragged back to Tegel for the villagers to gawk at my ruined body and point it out as a warning to others. "

Lars nods. "Burn Bhartec, then get drunk. To hell with the gawkers." He bobs his head some more. "Got it."

Lars continues nodding his head. "Yep, yep." He yawns hugely, his vaguely simian features parting to reveal impressively large and mottled dentition. "I'm tired. Killing gnolls is still better than working, though."

[Have we got more stuff to do, or do we fast-forward to the next day?]

[Please take a look at the "West" Tegel map and let me know which way you want to go to get back to the village. The solid lines around the village fields are fences. You are currently located in the ruins on the cleared area on the hill, in the center of the woods just to the north of the marsh. It's late at night.

The obvious routes are west along the Boiling Brook to the South Road; north to the East Road, which would take you perilously close to the hilltop Temple; and northwest across the fields, which would require crossing fences and crops.]

[I say we go west and meet up with the South Road. Looks like the easiest route.]

From atop the hillock, you see fires burning in Tegel Village. Collecting Bhartec's discomfited-but-intact horse, you hoist your grim burdens and make your way along the Boiling Brook to the South Road. The journey is tense, not only because of the weight of your fallen comrade, but because here and there in the deep shadow, you see the glowing eyes and hear the hungry whines of prowling wolves, causing Bhartec's horse to nicker uneasily ...

The fires, it turns out, burn not for the usual Rudimentary festivities, but for two other dead Tegelmen -- regrettably, not of Kinfird's band, all of whom glare at you in the orange light of the corpsefires. These two worthies, you are told, fell in battle with Serpent Men in the ruins, their bodies hewed and hacked. Valcerdies has ordered that the bodies be burned here, in plain sight, as the first martyrs of the coming Crusade, rather than in the final darkness of the monastery's ovens to the south.

The gathered villagers, already sullen and shocked, gasp and murmur when your own losses and injuries become evident, and the Curate is summoned. He looks considerably cleaner and more composed than when last you saw him, though he has not changed into the traditional funerary frock, instead remaining armored.

"What happened to this child of God?" inquires Valcerdies upon seeing dead Divad. "How did he fall?"

"Did him in themselves, like as not," Kinfird mutters just out of the Curate's earshot.

Ternelmor, the Mayor, watching grimly from the crowd, glances in Kinfird's direction, and the ruffian goes silent.

"Gnolls. Four of them. Dead." Lars bares his teeth in a grin and shows off the leather cord with ears strung on it for drying. "We had some, sorta, dead guys, who were running around with their mouths sewn shut, and attacked us. Had to kill them too." Lars cocks his head. "Haven't seen their like before. New ones."

Sitting utop his horse, " Divad died bravely in battle, driving back the forces of the night and uttering the name of the church with his last breath."

Nodding to the group, "I'd be done to a turn myself, so off to find a drink and a good wallow to sleep. I shall meet you in a septnight or so? I should not be too difficult to find."

Bhartec will heal up and whatnot. He will meet the party when they are likewise healed.

Sinlocah sees to the burning of Divad then goes into seclusion. Meditation and prayer are his two main pursuits until the group goes on Crusade again.
