Hello.
I found a link to this forum on the Original D&D discussion boards concerning The Marches campaign starting soon.
driver [aka Scott] presented such interesting material, I figured I'd lurk and see what was up. Everything looks wicked cool so far!
Scott PMed and asked me to introduce myself, so...
My name is Tom, and I've been gaming since around 1982. I was in the 7th grade when my friend John introduced me to this game his grandparents gave him [for Christmas?...can't remember]. I eventually borrowed hi blue rules manual [I now know it's the Holmes edition] and started immediately falling in love.
John actually played AD&D with his neighborhood friends, but there were rumors going around that a gaming club might form. Coincidentally, my sister's boyfriend was a former gamer and was looking to sell his stuff. For $30 I got the AD&D Player's Handbook, the AD&D Dungeonmaster's Guide, and these 3 little brown books that had these odd rules that didn;t quite fit the ones in the big hardcover books. Interestingly enough, those little brown books were not the infamous 3lbs, but rather Greyhawk, Blackmoor, and Eldritch Wizardry; I also have the whitish Swords & Spells too!
This was my introduction to gaming. That gaming club at school never stabilized, and that seemed to be a theme in my life. I've played nearly every iteration of D&D, a heavily house-ruled version of Runequest, both early versions of Marvel Superheroes, and a handful of other games as one-shots or at conventions. Easily, I own several dozen RPGs and a couple hundred supplements of various games.
And yet, I can never seem to find a stable group! hehe
I was recently drawn back to OD&D because of the 4E controversy; I and my one gaming friend both do not hold much promise in the newest iteration of D&D. I think some of the innovations are fantastic, but something feels missing. This "lack" I feel led me to re-explore the older versions, and I was very intrigued by Labyrinth Lord, OSRIC, and Basic RPG. There's an odd elegance to these simple rules. I still think a basic ruleset for skills is necessary, but the craziness of 3E's skill & feat options were overkill.
So, this is me... I look forward to reading how your game unfolds. I especially like some of the campaign quirks being introduced in The Marches. I like how Elves are being presented as changelings. I like how you've created a simple but interesting church that has something of a religion [beyond simply being places to go for healing]. I also like some of the quirky characters being created.
To me, the atmosphere being created here is what I have missed most in the mechanics-obsessed recent editions.
Good luck and happy adventuring! |

Because you're open to playing 34-year old dead RPGs? _________________ The penalty for success is to be bored by the people who used to snub you. |

It's not dead. It's just in a deep, deep sleep.
You know, like, "That is not dead which can eternal lie" and all that...
Oh, and I'm from Eastern PA. Grew up in the Lehigh Valley, lived in Philadelphia for over a decade while attempting grad school, now relocating nearby. |
