Ymmas takes note of the hand with which he writes, and the fingers on the hand with which he doesn't write.

"This one seems defiant, miss, but he seems to understand you. Tell him there are a lot of ways to die, and some of them are passing slow."

Ymmas looks down and smiles at the man, as though at a puppy not yet house-broken.

"He seems resistant to speak in the language we share. Apparently he speaks gnoll but resents it. He seems prepared to die. Who knew a charm of fascination would have been wise to prepare today," Kexy sighs.

"Let's kill him and move on before his peers come looking for him."

If Bhartec makes no immediate sign of objection, Lars stomps on the man's throat, hacks off his hand at the wrist, and kicks his keening frame over the edge of the pit. He takes the hand as a trophy.

Bhartec makes no objections but makes a motion akin to 'lets move along'.

The man gurgles under Lars's boot as the warrior excises his hand, then screams all the way down the chasm.

[Which way? Open double doors to north, passages to east and west of the doors, or the eastern branch of the bridge?]

Bhartec will nudge Lars along north to the double doors and check them out.

[Sounds fine to me. North it is. If there were bad guys behind the other door, surely they would have come to the aid of their companions. *shrug.* ]

[Oh, one of the warriors you looted had a bronze whistle carved with a skull rune on a leather thong around his neck.)

The double doors open into a circular chamber about 40' in diameter. At the approximate center of the room is a basin resting on a 3' tall pillar of lacquered skulls. At the north end of the room is a 10' diameter column of black drapery hanging from the ceiling 20' down to the floor.

[Well, somebody's going to take that whistle. If nobody else does, Lars will.]

"Uhh, Sinlocah? Looks like we've got some, uhh, churchy stuff."

[The double doors seem to be the only entrance/exit unless there's something behind those drapes.]

[Does this appear to be some kind of temple? What kind of skulls make up the pillar? Sinlocah will cautiously enter the room and look around, making sure the monks spread out around him.]

The skulls are human and are lacquered together with some sort of clear, glistening shellac. Sinlocah hazards a guess that the basin is used for the blessing of holy water, for ritual purification, or some other function that requires consecrated or desecrated liquid.

Sinlocah has a palpable feeling of unease and disturbance as he enters the chamber ... the curved walls are vaguely mottled and marbled -- the patterns seem to shift and writhe -- shapes dart and dance at the edge of vision. The overall effect provokes nausea and mild vertigo, and the four Holy Brothers take a brief respite from their usual smite-ready stance to cross themselves.

Kexy will nock an arrow and prepare to fire on anything that should leap from behind the drapes onto poor Bhartec.
